My 5 top tips for planning a breastfeeding clothes wardrobe |
Article by Tracey Campbell |
Junior Magazine recently asked me to submit my 5 top tips for planning a breastfeeding clothes wardrobe. The information I sent them (and which they published) follows below.
Start your planning early. Be aware that there are breastfeeding garments suitable to be worn during pregnancy as well. Many manufacturers of breastfeeding clothes specifically design all their garments so that they can be worn throughout pregnancy and beyond, making them great value for money. The styles flatter pregnant and post partum bodies. There are many such brands, for example 1 in the Oven, Fresh Mums, Honeysuckle Mums, Top Secret and the new Soft Shirt by Fertile Mind.
Take a fresh look at your existing clothes and imagine how they could be used for breastfeeding. Many regular wrap tops are great for breastfeeding in, by simply moving aside one of the cups.
Start with the basics. There are quite a few breastfeeding singlets/ tank tops on the market. Start with 2 or 3 of these in basic colours. You can wear them on their own and they are also great as undershirts during colder weather.
Invest in a comfortable sleep bra and pajamas – Especially great for hospital and those first few weeks at home. Many of the pajamas currently available can also easily double as loungewear. Kyrawear make a lovely sleep bra – very basic, very comfortable.
Special occasions. It is a good idea to have something lined up for special occasions to avoid last-minute shopping. When choosing your “special-occasion standby” consider items that can be dressed up/ down so that you get maximum value for money. There are for example some breastfeeding dresses on the market which can easily be dressed up for a wedding, but which also look great worn with leggings for a more casual look.
